Firewood As Decor

Since the freakishly warm weather continues, there is almost nothing on-topic to report at the moment.  So, I’m sharing this photo-essay about using firewood as decor.  I love all of these!  Especially the one with the painted logs… which reminds me of writing numbers on the wood… which is not something I would ever do, of course.

(P.S.  I did restack the pile that fell over, and then built another even longer one, and still there is more wood coming from Treemagedon.  Three more fellings and the property will be Norway-maple-free.)

question: I live in Pittsburgh, PA and am trying to see just how long I can go without turning on the heat this fall/winter. Temp. in the house this morning was 40 degrees. do you worry about your pipes freezing?

Not anymore, but only because I’ve investigated it to the point that I’m no longer guessing about the risk. Maybe I’ll do a full post on this, as it is probably the #1 most-asked question. But for the moment, my advice is:

    1) Know where ALL your pipes are. If you don’t know, investigate until you’re sure.
    2) Determine (theoretically, or, if necessary, empirically) which spot of your piping is the coldest.
    3) Set up some sort of system to monitor that spot (a wireless thermometer works well), or to actively heat that spot (and any similar spots) if things get too cold.

This is an off-post topic…I’m attaching a link to an article about heating aid for the needy being cut. The article focuses on, and has some avg heating cost and similar stats specific to, Maine and New England. Thought it may be of interest.

OMG, 40! Todd, I for one would be interested in reading about your experiences living in a house that’s gotten as cold as 40 degrees… I’d imagine there are others who would find your experiences and observations interesting, too, if you’re inclined to write.
